Let There Be Fire!

A client of mine moved into an elegant condo that had a wonderful view and great space, but lacked a fireplace. The client had dreams of a fireplace flanked by built-ins that accommodated a television, but it was not possible to install a gas fireplace in the building and she did not want an electric one.

Determined to give her the fireplace wall she wanted, I founds a freestanding ethanol-burning fireplace with its own concrete surround. Centering it on the feature wall I designed a stone mosaic surround, mantle and built-ins with storage for television equipment as well as glass shelves on which to display her impressive collection of Inuit sculpture. The fireplace wall is now a focal point of the large living room and provides extra warmth on cold evenings.
