Northern Lights Chair
I was delighted to participate in the Furniture Bank's Chair Affair 2014 (www.furniturebank.org), with the collaboration of my sister, artist Lisa Meschino. In this fund-raising event designers select an old chair from the Furniture Bank's inventory and then revamp it for auction. Proceeds go to support the Furniture Bank's amazing work.
This year's theme of Canada was a challenging one. In searching for our inspiration we were looking for a symbol of unity, something that tied the country together.
We found our inspiration in the Northern Lights. Visible from every province and territory in Canada, the lights convey the awe-inspiring majesty of our country's physical landscape and represents the ever-changing beauty and variety of the social and cultural landscape.
On our chair back is an original artwork by Lisa, inspired by the Northern Lights and transcribed onto fabric. Our toss cushion contains a line from the Robert Service poem "Ode to the Northern Lights." In this way our Northern Lights chair, itself a work of art, includes the expression of Canadian creativity, both past and present.
