When my clients, a professional couple with two young boys, purchased their elegant older home, one of their first missions was to transform the existing family room addition into a comfortable, colourful spot for the entire family to enjoy.
The existing family room was spacious with a cathedral ceiling and beautiful French doors and windows overlooking the lovely backyard. The room itself, though, was cold-looking and uninviting, with ceramic tile flooring and a fireplace that looked lost in the middle of a large wall.
The first order of business was to replace the tile floor with dark-stained hardwood to match the rest of the home; I designed a wall of built-ins, incorporating the existing fireplace, to provide needed storage and house the television.
A large sectional and chairs now offer comfortable seating for TV viewing and family gatherings. The deep orange and gold colour scheme was inspired by a favourite piece of artwork the couple had brought to the new home; a shag-textured rug anchors the room and offers the adorable boys a warm, soft place to frolic.
